The lil’ things

I’ve had vertigo for almost a week now and it’s really racked my mind and my body. Fortunately, I was able to celebrate and enjoy Thanksgiving with my immediate family, which was quiet and peaceful, but I’ve pretty much been couch-ridden and sleeping for several days straight. That said, it’s time to stop moping! In the spirit of thanks and giving that we as a nation recall more than ever during this winter holiday season I’d like to make a shout-out to the people that do small things that help us get through our days. So, here’s a thank-you  to the consistent door-holders (and especially those who so often are not thanked by their passersby [ahem! you know who you are]), the hallway hello-ers and wavers, and the people that smile in our direction when we need it the most (ever if they’re maybe not even smiling at “us” it’s fine, take it!). A thank-you to the moms and dads making meals for their kids and working hard so that their children can have a …

Today is Veteran’s day and many in the United States are hopefully taking a little bit of time to think about all those people who gave their time and sometimes their lives to fight for our country. I have had the honor and pleasure to meet some of our current soldiers and veterans, especially within the past few days. It’s been amazing to see older people interacting with younger schoolchildren, kids asking questions of their elders who served and being courteous and respectful as they listen to war stories but  ultimately most of the stories were about friendship and family. I listened to a woman who was approaching 100. Her brother had fought in WWI and WWII and she had baked for the cause. She knew her brother had to be in the war and couldn’t stop him, but she did what she could to help him out. I heard a child of about 11 years old tell a veteran that he was a hero and the veteran shrugged and said “Oh, no, I was …
